Three more villages in Hangzhou, capital of East China's Zhejiang province, were recently added to the national list of historical and cultural villages, according to the Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development and the State Administration of Cultural Heritage. This takes the total of historical and cultural villages now in Hangzhou to six, including the newly listed Shangwufang village, Li village and Maoping village. Located on the southwest of Jiande city of Hangzhou, Shangwufang village is surrounded by mountains and renowned for its Hui-style architecture featuring multiple-layered and well-arranged apartment buildings. Maoping village, an ancient village with a history of over 900 years, was built during the Song and Yuan Dynasties (960-1368). As an important gateway for commodities and a must-stop for passing merchants, the village was one of the most economically developed villages in ancient times. Li village, located in Tonglu county, has a history of over a thousand years. The well-preserved architecture, which blends with the beautiful scenery, reflects the cultural values and customs of local villagers and is rich in regional characteristics.
