Zhejiang students studying abroad stay united to fight against the COVID-19 pandemic

Wu Siqi, a girl from Wenzhou, Zhejiang Province who is in the United States, studies in the Animation Department, School of Visual Arts New York. Here is her story.

At the end of January, I built a WeChat group for Chinese students in America to help each other fight against COVID-19. Meanwhile, I decided to bring art students’ strong points into play to hold an art exhibition against COVID-19.

On the last day of February, the art exhibition was held at the students’ center of our school. Scores of works regarding medical workers rushing to the frontlines of Wuhan, horrible viruses and the hero Zhong Nanshan...attracted many students’ attention. We allocated more than 100 handbooks against COVID-19, 100 small cards for personal temperature measurements and 100 bottles of hand sanitizer to visitors to the exhibition.

In early March, North America was subject to the massive outbreak of COVID-19. Afterward, our school started online teaching, and we began to stay at home for isolation.

To appease the Chinese students in America, I shared positive stories and guidelines on fighting against COVID-19 through the WeChat group for Chinese students abroad to help each other fight against COVID-19 every day. The members of our Students’ Union also translated the emails from our school into Chinese, forwarded them to parents, and integrated parents’ opinions and suggestions.

Wenzhou Fellowship Association of Chinese Students Abroad and Parents and overseas Chinese representatives in America built “air rescue stations” for us. We could indicate our needs through the WeChat group if any. The Consulate-General of the People’s Republic of China in New York mailed masks to my home, and I delivered them to students of our school who needed them.

In delivering the masks, we tried our best to shorten each student’s journey for getting the masks, in order that they didn’t have to travel across half of the city to get the masks.

Studying abroad, we have bravely and firmly stood together, because we know that our powerful motherland is supporting behind us to fight against COVID-19.
