As Chinese major telecom carriers seemed to be gearing up for a 5G race, Xiaoshan district of Hangzhou, Zhejiang province signed a cooperation agreement with China Mobile Group Zhejiang Co for 5G trials on Dec 20. 5G, referring to the fifth generation of wireless technology, enables gigabit speeds and more powerful connectivity. According to the agreement, the two parties will jointly enhance integration of advanced technologies including the internet of things and big data with advantageous industries in Xiaoshan, a substantial step towards the development of the regional digital economy. Two billion yuan ($289.45 million) will be invested in network infrastructure for full fiber coverage in urban and rural areas of the district. Further efforts will also be made in the sector of information technology and the construction of smart cities, especially in public security, healthcare, transportation, education, tourism and intelligent manufacturing. Xiaoshan district will strive to be a pioneer in Hangzhou's ambition to take the lead in national digital economy and it is hoped that cooperation between the two parties will advance digital economy in the district, said Tong guili, secretary of the CPC Xiaoshan District Committee.
