In recent years, the number of mandarin ducks in the West Lake area has been steadily increasing, with sightings year-round. This growth can be attributed not only to the improving natural environment but also to a dedicated group of guardians working quietly to protect these beautiful birds.
Lu Jianli, 62 years old, is the captain of the mandarin duck guard team at the West Lake, affectionately known by the locals as the Dad of Mandarin Ducks at the West Lake. Since joining the team in 2017, he has made it a daily routine to walk around the lake several times, searching for mandarin ducks, capturing their moments on camera, and monitoring the birth of baby mandarin ducks. He also kindly advises visitors against feeding them. Over the past eight years, he has devoted himself to this cause without seeking recognition or reward. Protecting the mandarin ducks has become an integral part of his life and a lifelong mission.
