"I will try my best to serve as an escort of Asian Games Hangzhou 2022 and a spokesman for Beautiful Hangzhou, to show the mien of Hangzhou volunteers with the best status, the greatest enthusiasm and the most charming smile." This is the vow made by Song Maodang at preparation pledge rally for Asian Games Hangzhou 2022 on April 1. It indicates his determination as the representative of recruited volunteers.
Born in 1993, Song Maodang lost his right arm in an accident at the age of 8. However, he did not give up at the very low point of his life. With the encouragement of his teachers and classmates, he started to learn swimming, and invariably kept swimming for 10,000 m a day. His efforts and perseverance paid off. He won the champion for men's 4*100m mixed relay for swimming at London Paralympics 2012 and Rio Paralympics 2016 respectively. He also won the champion for men's 100m butterfly (S8) at Rio Paralympics 2016, breaking the world record.
After his retirement, Song Maodang completed his study in Beijing Sports University and then took a job in Tonglu Youth Palace. His experience was a living example of the saying that "one shall go for a brilliant life, not wait for it."
At the beginning of 2022, Song Maodang was chosen as a volunteer for Asian Games Hangzhou 2022 after rounds of competitions. He will continue to serve the sports career he loves so much as a volunteer, and make his due contributions to Asian Game Hangzhou 2022 to be staged in his hometown.
Like all recruited volunteers, he will provide voluntary services for dressage, jumping, eventing and other equestrian sports in the equestrian competition venue.
His special experience as an athlete helps him to be admitted as a volunteer, and he is confident to be a competent volunteer.
