In Hangzhou, capital city of East China’s Zhejiang province, there is a new type of bank called food bank. Commodities in the bank are donated and purchasing these commodities need a virtual currency called “happiness coin”. What is a food bank look like?

Sun Yifei, director at Beishan branch of Hangzhou West Lake Food Bank, said that the bank is a welfare facility that helps people who are in need.

“The acceptance and delivery of every piece of food is traceable. We manage them through an online platform,” said Sun.

Sun said that all commodities in the bank are donated by companies and individuals. Now 17 companies and four residents have donated to this bank.

To purchase these commodities, residents can apply for “happiness coin” from civil affairs departments and earn from doing voluntary work.

Food to be expired within seven days will be displayed every Monday to Friday for residents nearby to pick for free.
