Hangzhou Zoo's beloved giant panda Xiangguo turned five on July 6, marking her second birthday in the city with a festive celebration filled with treats, gifts and public affection.
The highlight was a five-tier ice cake topped with Xiangguo's favorite pumpkin and decorated with bamboo leaves, apples and corn. The birthday bash, held in an air-conditioned room to beat the summer heat, also featured a cake designed by locals and handcrafted birthday cards from panda fans.
Xiangguo, now visibly chubbier and thriving after nearly two years in Hangzhou, delighted spectators with her lively energy — climbing atop the cake table and devouring all the apples.
Well-wishers from panda centers nationwide sent video greetings, while fellow panda Chunsheng joined the feast. The celebration continues with panda-themed souvenirs, stage plays and exhibitions, drawing crowds to honor one of Hangzhou Zoo's star residents.
