The 2024 Song Dynasty Charm series began its Binjiang edition on Nov 13, blending Song Dynasty (960-1279) culture with the vibrant international atmosphere of Binjiang district.
The event featured traditional activities like archery games, Xixing bamboo lantern crafting, and Zhejiang-style guqin demonstrations, offering participants a glimpse into ancient China's refined aesthetics.
The event attracted locals and international residents from countries like South Africa, Malaysia, and Canada, who immersed themselves in tea rituals, ancient melodies, and cultural workshops. Foreign attendees, some dressed in hanfu, joined children in reciting Song poetry, creating a heartfelt cross-cultural exchange.
Among the highlights, the enamel art exhibit stood out, with live demonstrations of intricate techniques such as wire inlay and coloring. Jason from South Africa noted, "Experiencing the entire process served as a vivid introduction to the beauty of Chinese craftsmanship."
Another popular exhibit showcased Xixing bamboo lanterns, a traditional craft dating back to the Southern Song Dynasty (1120-1279). Artisan Cai shared this year's dragon-themed designs, celebrating the Chinese New Year. Visitors also marveled at handwoven fabric buttons and Zhejiang-style guqin performances, blending history with modern sensibilities.
The main event will kick off on Nov 15 at the Zhejiang Library's Wenlan Theater, featuring a Song Yun book list release, curated walking routes, and a lecture series led by renowned experts.
