A global organization dedicated to improving laws on intellectual property rights, AIPPI, is holding its congress in the eastern city of Hangzhou. CGTN's Gong Ming interviewed the group's secretary-general, Nazli Korkut, to discuss China's participation in the global IP landscape, and the challenges posed by AI and e-commerce.
NAZLI KORKUT Secretary General of AIPPI "The importance of AIPPI having the congresses in different regions is that because the main aim is the harmonization of IP laws at national and regional levels. It's good to see from different perspectives, from different jurisdictions, what this IP harmonization can be, how far it can go. So for the IP community in China, the IP market in China, we all know that China is growing every year with all the industry and communication and all AI tools. It's very important that there is a big pool of talent and innovation in China. So China is just like all the other countries has to benefit from the IP protection systems, which makes it more sensitive to IP protection in the country and across the boards."
GONG MING CGTN Reporter "This year the congress gonna discuss four questions and there's a Hangzhou resolution will be released as well. What's the main focus of this year? How China can contribute to this?"
NAZLI KORKUT Secretary General of AIPPI "This will be again about the patents, trademarks, copyright, and some general litigation matters. All our national groups, including the Chinese AIPPI group, contributes to these study questions. The members try to find a solution or try to find a common way regarding the harmonization. Our program committee tries to put some local flavors we call it, but from the perspective. If there is something which can be globally discussed with the contribution of the national group, it is always important. And we try to also recruit some speakers from the national group to share their professional acumen with all members."
GONG MING CGTN Reporter "Nowadays, we know like IP protection also facing some challenges in terms of new technologies rising like AI, E-commerce. What kind of challenge do you think those posed to the IP landscape and how this will be discussed?"
NAZLI KORKUT Secretary General of AIPPI "E-commerce, AI or other technologies, from a general perspective, they advance in front of law, law has to catch up while introducing a legal framework, a solid legal framework regarding the implementation within this areas. So this is very important for AIPPI, because AIPPI also prepares position papers in order to touch upon basis some important points. This will also shape other future questions of AIPPI regarding which already has about E-commerce. And it will also tackle, especially the focus regarding AI."
