Hangzhou South Coach Station was closed on August 15. Since its opening in 1988, it has witnessed significant changes in travel modes.
Ten years ago, road transport dominated long-distance travel in Hangzhou, accounting for nearly 70% of total passenger volume.
However, in recent years, railway travel has overtaken road transport, with high-speed rail becoming the preferred mode of long-distance travel. In 2023, Hangzhou's highway passenger volume reduced by 76 percent, and its railway passenger volume grew by 104 percent.
As the high-speed rail network expands and more people own private vehicles, an increasing number of travelers opt for high-speed rail and personal cars.
In addition, China's quantity of highway stations decreases, which reflects changes in travel modes.
