Xiaoshan's cultural scene just got richer with the recent opening of the Lai Xinxia Academy, formerly known as the Lai Xinxia Local Chronicles Museum.
This institution is China’s first local chronicles museum named after a scholar, Mr. Lai Xinxia. Founded in 2007 with a core collection generously donated by Lai himself, a renowned historian and champion of Xiaoshan’s cultural heritage, the academy now boasts a new home within the Xianghu Lake area. Recognizing its unique potential, Xiaoshan District has transformed the museum into the Lai Xinxia Academy, setting the stage for even grander ambitions in the future.
“The transformation aims to delve deeper into Xiaoshan’s cultural heritage, celebrate Mr. Lai's incredible legacy, and enrich Xiaoshan's cultural tapestry,” explains a Xiaoshan District spokesperson.
Nestled in a courtyard at X-LIVIN, No. 2077 Yuewang Road, Phase II of the Xianghu National Resort, the Lai Xinxia Academy embodies the spirit of “reading as a blessing.” This two-story traditional-style building houses over 30,000 books, all available to the public for free. It’s a haven for book lovers, hosting regular readings, lectures, seminars, exhibitions, and more. The academy’s mission stretches beyond books, aiming to cultivate a vibrant “academy of the soul” that fosters interest in reading culture, local heritage, historical knowledge, Xianghu Lake’s unique identity, and the legacies of inspirational local figures.
Step inside the academy, and you’ll find a dedicated reading area called “China in Local Records,” showcasing local chronicles from across the nation, including treasures like The Glory of Yue (Yue Jue Shu), Hangzhou Chronicles, and (Kangxi Period) Qiantang County Chronicles, and Lianan Chronicles. Or you can immerse yourself in the life and legacy of Mr. Lai Xinxia. There is a permanent exhibition unfolding Mr. Lai’s story, highlighting his character, passion, and scholarly contributions. The sematic section “Eight Thousand Years of Xiaoshan” delves into the district’s fascinating history and achievements, including those relating to the Communist Party of China. For those seeking a broader exploration, the academy offers specialized areas focusing on Chinese studies, aesthetics, science, and personal growth. Don’t miss the experiential area showcasing a unique aspect of local intangible cultural heritage – Chuantuo, which is a traditional Chinese technique used to reproduce inscriptions, patterns, or designs from stone or metal surfaces onto paper. Since its soft opening in July 2023, the Lai Xinxia Academy has hosted over 90 events and welcomed more than 60,000 visitors.
Lai Xinxia (1923-2014), a Xiaoshan native, dedicated his life to championing his hometown’s cultural legacy. A renowned historian, chronicler, and librarian, Lai played a crucial role in propelling Xiaoshan’s local chronicles onto the national stage. Today, his legacy lives on through the Lai Xinxia Academy. His donation of over 7,000 monographs and related books laid the foundation for the Lai Xinxia Local Chronicles Museum.
