On March 5, amidst the scenic landscapes of Hangzhou's West Lake Longjing Tea plantation in Wengjiashan village, echoed the resounding shouts of "Tea, sprout!" as tea farmers expressed their hopes for a fruitful Longjing Tea harvest this year.
This was the "shout for tea" ceremony held on the day of Jingzhe, marking the beginning of early spring. As temperatures rise and nature rejuvenates, locals gather annually for the folk tradition.
Dating back to 1936, the tradition has deep roots in Wengjiashan village, where settlers from the neighboring province of Fujian brought their tea cultivation practices.
During this year's event, in addition to the customary rituals led by young tea enthusiasts, international guests, including students from Hangzhou Changqiao Primary School and visitors from countries like the United States, United Kingdom, and South Korea, joined in the chanting.
Among the participants was Raquel Moreira from Portugal, who, despite her limited proficiency in Mandarin, enthusiastically shouted along with the crowd, expressing her interest in tea culture and her desire to experience local traditions.
Sun Bin, Party secretary of the village, highlighted the event's international appeal, noting the participation of guests who had previously visited for Longjing Tea studies. Delighted by the opportunity to engage in traditional Chinese customs, the visitors eagerly embraced the cultural charm of the "shout for tea" ceremony.
