A few days ago, Hangzhou released data about its population distribution in each region, providing insights from multiple perspectives. By the end of 2022, the total population of Hangzhou was 12,376,000, with an increase of 172,000 compared with 2021. Thereinto, Xiaoshan District enjoys the largest population with 2.11 million residents.
In nine out of 13 districts and counties, the number of women exceeded that of men, which was mainly concentrated in urban areas. Binjiang District was an exception, with more men than women. This can be attributed to its industrial structure. There were more high-end manufacturing and internet enterprises that attract a larger male workforce there.
From the perspective of population age structure, Binjiang District was the youngest urban area in the city. The proportion of people aged 18-34 accounted for 26.3%, ranking the first. More young people can show great potential for innovation and consumption.
In terms of employment, Xiaoshan District recorded the highest number of employed individuals, reaching 525,511, followed by Binjiang District and Xihu District. This suggests that, these three urban areas boast rich industries and many enterprises.
Another interesting aspect in population structure was overseas tourists. In 2022, Hangzhou welcomed 96,412 overseas tourists. Among them, the largest number of tourists came from Hong Kong, China, followed by Taiwan, China.
Overall, compared with 2021, the number of overseas tourists received by Hangzhou in 2022 saw a significant decline of approximately 47%, and the largest decrease was observed in the number of tourists from Indonesia.
However, there were also many countries (regions) experiencing an increase in the number of tourists who visited Hangzhou. The number of tourists from India was more than quadruple, and the number of tourists from UK doubled. Moreover, the number of tourists from Japan, Italy, Korea, France, and the Philippines increased in varying degrees.
