During the summer vacation as the peak season for tourism, the cross-sea bridge leading to Zhoushan is often congested with vehicles. Ningbo-Zhoushan Railway that many citizens of Hangzhou yearn for is under intense construction.

Ningbo-Zhoushan Railway starts from Ningbodong Station and ends in Dinghai of Zhoushan, with a designed speed of 250 km/h, passing by 7 stations. The railway extends through Xihoumen Highway & Railway Bridge as the widest cross-sea bridge in the world, and Jintang Subsea Tunnel as the longest subsea high-speed railway tunnel in the world. It is expected to be completed and put into operation in 2028.

After the opening, people can reach Zhoushan from Ningbo by high-speed rail within 26 minutes, which saves about 1 hour compared with self-driving. From Hangzhou to Zhoushan, it is estimated to take just over 1 hour, saving nearly 2.5 hours compared with self-driving.
