Yuhang paper umbrella making is a Zhejiang provincial intangible cultural heritage. From selecting the bamboo, cutting it into sticks, coating paper with seed oil to folding the paper canopy, it takes more than 15 days and 72 steps for three or four craftsmen to make a traditional paper umbrella.

Liu Weixue, a post-90s craftsman from Pingyao town, Yuhang district of Hangzhou, is an inheritor of Yuhang paper umbrella. After graduating from Hangzhou Normal University in 2014 with a bachelor's degree in environmental design, Liu Weixue quit his job at a design company in Hangzhou and set up his own paper umbrella design studio in 2015.

Liu has made creative changes to find a balance between the craft and contemporary life. He invites artists to design patterns that are derived from traditional culture and cartoon characters.

Liu wants more than just to sell paper umbrellas. He has given lectures on paper umbrella making at nearby schools and communities and taken his umbrellas to arts and crafts festivals and exhibitions.

He hopes more young people can join in the vocation of intangible cultural heritage and carry on this traditional handicraft.
