Hangzhou posts impressive consumption figures during May Day holiday

Hangzhou, capital of East China's Zhejiang province, saw impressive consumer spending figures during the just-passed May Day holiday, with several areas surpassing expectations.

According to data released by the Hangzhou municipal bureau of commerce, the city's total consumer spending during the holiday period amounted to 14.64 billion yuan ($2.12 billion), a year-on-year increase of 40.9 percent, and an increase of 18.6 percent compared to 2019. Of this total, retail and dining expenditures were 7.41 billion yuan and 2.61 billion yuan, respectively, year-on-year increases of 26.6 percent and 127.7 percent.

Hangzhou's 25 major shopping malls generated revenue of 752 million yuan during the period, a year-on-year increase of 38.0 percent. New energy vehicle companies Tesla, NIO, and BYD achieved total sales of 395.2 million yuan, a year-on-year increase of 48.6 percent. The 26 large supermarket chains, including Century Lianhua, achieved sales of 235 million yuan, a year-on-year increase of 3.5 percent.

Dining was also a popular activity during the holiday, as the city's more than 80,000 dining establishments recorded 8.28 million transactions and generated revenue of 2.71 billion yuan, year-on-year increases of 184.8 percent and 127.7 percent, respectively.

These impressive figures demonstrate the strength and vitality of Hangzhou's consumer market, as well as the city's continued development as a major economic and cultural hub in China.
