HAGOC Announces the Third Call for Submissions of Songs for the Hangzhou Asian Games

Songs are an important part of the enduring legacy of the Asian Games, with the 19th Asian Games Hangzhou 2022 being no different. The right songs also create fond memories of the event in people's minds. A milestone in our preparations for the Games, the open calls for musical works have drawn the attention of the public, and enjoyed participation from musicians across the globe since they were first launched in 2020. To add even more excitement to, and increase public enthusiasm for, the Games, the 19th Asian Games Hangzhou 2022 Organising Committee (HAGOC) is calling for a third round of submissions of songs for the Hangzhou Asian Games. The submission period will run from 8 October 2022 to 1 March 2023.

I.Participant Qualifications

Participants are not subject to any restrictions on nationality, age, gender or occupation. The invitation to submit is open to individuals and groups who are passionate about sport,and would like to support the Hangzhou Asian Games through original works.

II. Submission Requirements

In this third round of submissions, we are looking for original songs from around the globe. Participants should submit both lyrics and scores for their songs. 

Songs should capture the essence of the Hangzhou Asian Games, be in keeping with the following Games ideals -Life shines on life, power lights up power - and embody our goal of staging a spectacular Asian Games imbued with Chinese Style, Zhejiang Glamour and Hangzhou Flavour. Ideally, the songs will reflect Chinese values and traditional culture, and capture Hangzhou's character. The songs should capture the essence of the Asian Games, Hangzhou's charms and China's vibrancy in this new era. The songs will help build the city's image as an open, hospitable and inclusive Games Host and further mutual understanding and cultural exchange between people around the globe. Submissions can touch on ideas of wisdom, courage and emotion and the Asian Games spirit, ignite in people a passion for sport, and express hope for a bright future.

III. Submission Details

The invitation period will begin at 09:00 on 8 October 2022 and end at 17:00 on 1 March 2023 (GMT+8, Beijing time).

Participants can send their submissions via e-mail or by post to the address given below. Participants must complete the submission form, complete the related technical and legal documents and include these with their submission. (Please refer to the appendices.) Participants should ensure they submit all works in accordance with HAGOC requirements, as any incomplete or missing information will render a submission invalid. Songs must be original works distinct from previous Asian Games songs or songs created for other national or international sports events.

IV. Selection Process, Winners and Prizes

After the submission period has ended, HAGOC's panel of judges will review all eligible submissions over three stages. There will be a preliminary review, a second review and a final review. Fifty (50) works will then be shortlisted, with each song awarded a certificate. Ten (10) songs will be selected from this group, with each song receiving a cash prize of RMB 30,000 (pre-tax). In addition, finalist songs may be performed as part of the Asian Games, together with songs or music selected in previous calls.

Composers of finalist songs will be required to transfer copyright and other related rights to their works, to HAGOC. This should be confirmed in the documents provided (in the appendices) and must be submitted on or before the deadline.

HAGOC will retain the right to continue to use, distribute, modify, compile or perform without payment owing, any songs by submitters who fail to submit the relevant documents before the stated deadline.
