As a national intangible cultural heritage, Hangzhou Pingci (a type of storytelling and ballad singing in Hangzhou dialect), also known as Taozhen, was popular early in the Southern Song Dynasty. However, now, the development of Hangzhou Pingci is in the fracture period, and it is rarely known to modern people.
Recently, a group of summer interns from Zhejiang Normal University entered Hangzhou Art Performing Garden at Shiwukui Lane to listen to the story about Hangzhou Pingci and its inheritor Zhu Helei. With the assistance of Ma Laifa, an old ballad singer, Zhu Helei innovatively recreated Legend of White Snake for Pingci performance through eight years’ efforts, with a hope that local characteristic culture represented by Hangzhou Pingci will keep up with the times, and can be recognized by the audiences again and go back to people’s life.
