The living theaterMemories of Matsuko, adapted from a Japanese novel by Muneki Yamada and starring actress Zhang Jingchu, will be staged in Hangzhou this month.
The story begins when Matsuko dies of murder and her nephew Sho gets to progressively unveil many details of her mysterious past, discovering she wasn't only a forgotten outcast but led a bizarre life. As a schoolteacher in her youth, Matsuko took the fall for her student's crime. Unable to shake the resulting stigma, she was forced to live on the street and entered a series of abusive relationships. But a chance at happiness with an old flame gave her a sliver of hope.
The protagonist Zhang Jingchu is a Chinese film actress. Zhang is best known for winning the China Film Media Award Best Actress award for the 2005 film Peacock, shown at the Berlin International Film Festival. Zhang most recently appeared in the 2018 film Project Gutenberg.
