Mr. Li and his wife are one of last few rattan craftsmen in Hangzhou. It's been ovver 30 years that they are handweaving chairs and deck chairs in the same neighborhood.

“I came here today to ask Mr. Li to fix this chair he made 10 years ago,” said a customer who just drove across the city, “it’s very durable and holds memories.”

Making even the smallest chair requires at least 4 days, according to Mar. Li. It really involves time, patience and manual labor: peeling of the rattan strand and weaving into different design of the chairs – each design is unique.

Although popular several decades ago, the rattan furniture is no longer a fashion, yet Mr. Li keeps the business even after retirement.

“My son, now a vice general manager of a construction company, talked to us several times to get retired, but we just can’t let this craft skill go,” said Mr. Li, who gives each rattan chair a little bit more – the craftsmanship spirit.
