Music is my first love. I grew up in a music teacher's household, went to college and got a music degree and taught music for more than 15 years. It's in my blood. When I heard the world-renowned Jazz Festival was coming to Hangzhou and making its China debut on Oct.6th and 7th, I couldn't wait to get tickets! I was so excited! Two days of great music – let's go!!

With 9 bands over two days, everyone was good, but I definitely had my favorites! The opening act, Luo Ning Sextet was a great starter. They mostly played improv, and it was obvious they enjoyed playing their music. I loved watching Luo Ning play the piano. You know he is really into the music when he can't stay sitting down on his stool!

Etienne Jeanne Quartet was wonderful! I've heard Etienne before and enjoyed the addition of violin to his music. This quartet was a joy to listen to. Etienne is so much fun to watch and listen to as he plays. The entire quartet was a joy to watch and listen. I liked the dynamics between the players. I'm so glad that we can find Etienne locally. He is a treasure to have in Hangzhou!

It's a pity Shawn Dong was unable to sing. The band continued to play with the Erhu taking the melody lead of their missing lead singer. It was fun to watch the dynamics of the band. It was obvious they were having fun while figuring it all out on the spot. They did a pretty darn good job! Kudos to the band.

Finally, even though they were listed as rock in the program, I enjoyed the music of Hanggai from Inner Mongolia. The band had such a different vibe and the music definitely rocked! I could listen to them for a while! They were a great closer to a great evening of jazz. We called for more music, but they were unable to play more due to the time of the show needing to be over.

The rest of the groups were so very good! I enjoyed them all and it was a good time for sure. I hope the festival continues in Hangzhou. What a treat and honor for Hangzhou to have this festival. I can't wait for next year!
