On the morning of July 13, the Ministry of Culture and Tourism Key Laboratory of Digital Music Intelligent Processing Technology was launched at Zhejiang Conservatory of Music, making it the Ministry’s only key lab focusing on digital music technology and so far the only key lab set up in a music and art college.

On May 31, the Ministry of Culture and Tourism released its third list of key laboratories, counting 18 names in total; the Key Laboratory of Digital Music Intelligent Processing Technology based in Zhejiang Conservatory of Music was one of them.

The laboratory came into existence in response to a spiking demand for digital music technology and the strategy for the integrated development of culture and technology. Propped up by the expertise of the college and the innovative edge of Zhejiang Province as the country’s first Information Economy Demonstration Area and the National Digital Economy Innovation and Development Pilot Area, the lab has thus concentrated its efforts mainly on the applied research into intelligent music recognition and classification as well as the intelligent production of music elements. This is also where the strength of the lab lies, as one of the country’s most sophisticated research centers on digital music intelligent technology.

In the meantime, the lab has developed strategic cooperation with the AI Collaboration and Innovation Center of Zhejiang University and Hengdian Group, and forged a close link with NetEase and YAMAHA China on a wide range of research projects and technology applications. Up to this point, many projects have been brought to fruition in forms of products and activities, such as MUSICACOUSTICA-BEIJING, Longyou Caves Music Festival, Zhijiang International Youth Art Week, Listen-into-the-Future Concert series, NetEase’s AI-powered music system, and YAMAHA’s crossover piano series, all of which help push the boundaries of digital music and other related fields.

Later that afternoon, Zhejiang Conservatory of Music hosted a symposium on digital music intelligent processing technology. The event was attended by experts and scholars from renowned universities and colleges, such as Central Conservatory of Music, Shanghai Conservatory of Music, Hangzhou Dianzi University, and Sichuan Conservatory of Music. They delved into the evolution of digital music intelligent processing technology and the development of laboratories.
