Hangzhou released its2024 Annual Eco-Environment Reporton June 5, which showed steady improvement in air and water quality alongside stable soil and noise conditions.

According to the report, PM2.5 levels in the city center dropped to 30 micro grams per cubic meter, a 3.2 percent year-on-year improvement. Acid rain levels remained low. Surface water quality indicators — including key water bodies like Qiandao Lake and the Qiantang River — met top national standards for the fourth consecutive year. Noise and soil environments also remained stable, with high compliance rates for both construction land and agricultural soil safety.

Over the past year, Hangzhou advanced pollution control through over 2,100 emission-reduction projects, treated over 1,200 pollution discharge points, and restored seven contaminated land plots. The city also built 88 "quiet neighborhoods" and launched a digital monitoring network using AI, drones, and vehicle-based sensors.

Hangzhou continues to integrate ecological governance with digital innovation and green economic growth. It launched a pioneering urban greenhouse gas monitoring system and implemented 41 model projects across 19 provincial pilot zones. The city has also achieved a 100 percent compliance rate in the national carbon trading market for three consecutive years.

Looking ahead, Hangzhou aims to strengthen its green development, enhance public satisfaction with the environment, and become a national model for ecological modernization.
