With a diameter of 15.8 m, "Qinwang" shield tunneling machine successfully reached the receiving shaft at the bottom of the north bank of Fuchun River on March 9, indicating that the two-way cross-river tunnel of Qinwang Channel Project had cut through. This is the first tunnel across Fuchun River as well as the first railway and highway combined shield tunnel with extra large diameter in Zhejiang Province.
With a full length of 3,066 m, including 1,254m-long cross-river shield section, Qinwang channel of the tunnel connects downtown Fuyang with Fuchun Bay New Town on the south bank.
"The double-layered tunnel is a combination of railway and highway transport. The upper layer is the utility tunnel, and the lower layer is reserved for rail transit", said Wang Qiang, the deputy chief commander of the engineering construction.
Qinwang channel is the third main cross-river channel between downtown Fuyang on the north bank and Fuchun Bay New Town on the south bank and will greatly improve the commute efficiency between both banks. The time for crossing Fuchun River will be reduced from half an hour to as short as 3 minutes.
