A total of 306 Zhejiang Provincial Science and Technology Awards for the year 2021 were awarded on July 11, among which 192 were awarded to Hangzhou recipients, accounting for 63 percent of the provincial total, local media outlets reported.

Hangzhou, including its Xihu, Binjiang and Yuhang districts, won the top group award, while Yang Wei, a professor at Zhejiang University, and Shi Yigong, principal of the West Lake University, won the top individual awards.

Recipients from Hangzhou also claimed 35 of the 44 natural science awards, 14 of the 21 technological invention awards, and 141 of the 234 science and technology progress awards.

The internet plus, life sciences, and new materials industries won the most awards.

As the provincial capital of Zhejiang, Hangzhou has been dedicated to maintaining its leading role in scientific and technological innovation in the province.

Its R&D investment accounted for 3.59 percent of GDP, ranking first in Zhejiang and second among all provincial capitals in China. Its innovative capabilities also ranked second among domestic cities.

Hangzhou's efforts mainly include setting up professional research institutes, cultivating sci-tech enterprises at all scales, and attracting high-caliber professionals both at home and abroad.

In 2021, Hangzhou won the honorary title of "Most attractive Chinese city in the eyes of foreigners" for the 11th time in a row, ranking third on the list closely behind Beijing and Shanghai.
