Hangzhou: An extra-large city with young residents

Hangzhou in East China's Zhejiang province was listed as an "extra-large" city in this year's 18th issue of the Qiushi Journal, a flagship magazine of the CPC Central Committee, local media reported on Sept 23.

According to the magazine, cities with an urban population of 5 to 10 million should be referred as extra-large cities. More than 8.74 million people are living in Hangzhou's urban areas.

Based on the seventh national census, Hangzhou is home to 11.93 million people whose average age was 38.77. There were 8.37 million people aged from 15 to 59, accounting for 70.12 percent of the total.

According to the local statistics bureau, Xiaoshan district has as of Sept 17 the most people (709,384) aged from 20 to 39, while Qiantang district is the "youngest", with 32.5 being the average age of its residents.
