Ranking among the first batch of national historic cultural cities and the six ancient capitals in China, Hangzhou has been continuously settled for 8,000 years and has existed as a city for the last 5,000 years. If you look closely at the spectrum of the city’s characteristic cultural values, you will see that Hangzhou is one of the most earliest and famous ancient capitals in China’s history. Now it has entered a new development period, yet improvements are still required in many aspects by coordination throughout the city to build it into a historic cultural city: protection work in peripheral counties and cities needs to be strengthened compared with that in urban areas; heritages should be protected and utilized more integrally and systematically; historical culture activation and utilization should be better combined with urban development and blended in contemporary life, to name a few. As to regions and corridors with rich and centrally distributed historic cultural and natural resources, it should be specified the space requirements for overall protection as well as activation and utilization promotion; comprehensive protection and utilization of important heritage sites such as the Seawall in Qiantang Estuary and the Ruins of the Southern Song Dynasty Imperial City should be actively planned and implemented to build a world heritage community.
