Digital economy, an important driving force behind Hangzhou's economic development, became the focus on an episode of Dialogue, a prime time daily English talk show on CCTV.

The show invited Zhou Jiangyong, Party secretary of Hangzhou, and industrial leaders and experts from leading internet companies to share their thoughts on Hangzhou's digital economy.

Internet of things, cloud computing, and big data, all crucial to developing a strong digital economy, are penetrating every aspect of Hangzhou, from its digital infrastructure and industries to digital innovation and governance.

Last December, Hangzhou unveiled its ambitious plan to become the nation's foremost digital city through three major paths - industrialization of digital resources, digitalization of industries, and urban digitalization.

Industrialization of digital resources

Hangzhou, which is home to a number of world renowned internet companies, has been stepping up efforts to cultivate characteristic towns and attract entrepreneurs from home and abroad.

Zhang Yong, CEO of Alibaba Group, said that the company has witnessed the city grow into the capital of e-commerce. Today all of society is embracing digital economy.

In addition to its beautiful scenery, Hangzhou is also reputed for its sound government services.

"Hangzhou provides comprehensive and practical services to innovative companies, which is why we decided to set up shop in the city," said Ding Lei, CEO and founder of NetEase, one of China's leading internet and online game service providers.

Zhou believes that Hangzhou's healthy living environment and strength in innovation and entrepreneurship drive the development of the city's digital economy.

Digitalization of industries

Traditional industries in Hangzhou are increasingly going digital in order to increase their competitiveness at home and abroad, as evidenced by Chinese beverage maker Hangzhou Wahaha Group Co.

Established in 1987, the traditional manufacturing company has undergone significant changes after embracing digital technologies.

"We have used digital technologies to improve management and production," said Zong Qinghou, chairman of Hangzhou Wahaha Group, adding that the company has established an intelligent robot company to help digitalize the production process.

According to Zhou, the integration of digital economy and traditional manufacturing industries is ushering in a bright future.

Hangzhou will encourage all enterprises to tap into the potential of digital industrialization within the next three years.

Urban digitalization

The digitalization of urban management is making Hangzhou smarter by day.

In 2016, Hangzhou launched its "City Brain" project, an intelligent system for Hangzhou's urban management mainly based on big data, cloud computing and artificial intelligence. The system was designed to handle urban governance issues and transform Hangzhou into a smart city.

To date, the system has been applied in 48 different test scenarios, including transportation management, parking, tourism, medical care, public security and hotel booking.

Urban digitalization aims to improve the level of Hangzhou's urban management by leveraging big data and cloud computing, said Zhou.

In 2018, the added value of Hangzhou's digital economy recorded 335.6 billion yuan ($46.81 billion), accounting for 24.8 percent of the city's GDP and contributing more than 50 percent to regional economic growth.
