With the vision of hosting a green event, the Hangzhou Asian Games Organising Committee (HAGOC) strives to give the first-ever carbon-neutral Asian Games. However, the goal is hard to realise for such a large-scale international sports event.
The key to achieving carbon neutrality for the Asian Games rests on emissions reduction, towards which the HAGOC has initiated eight special projects, including green venue construction, green energy supply, and green transportation upgrading, trying to minimise carbon emissions. Take venue construction for Hangzhou Asian Games as an example. The HAGOC has employed existing venue and sports facility resources and only built 12 new venues; in design and engineering, a guideline on the green and healthy architectural design was compiled for the preferential use of green technologies and materials; in venue operation and management, green electricity, new energy vehicles, and new energy machinery are applied to reduce carbon emissions.
Carbon quotas, carbon credits, and carbon inclusions donated by organisations and individuals can be used to offset unavoidable carbon emissions and ultimately achieve carbon neutrality. A total of 45 organisations spanning across various industries have contributed to HAGOC's initiative for carbon offsetting. To date, the combined carbon offset donations for the Games have reached 1.068 million tonnes, in the forms of carbon quotas, CCER (China Certified Emission Reductions), carbon inclusion, and internationally certified carbon credits.
Besides, the public can participate in carbon offsetting in a variety of ways. For instance, users of Alipay can participate in the activity of "1 Kilogram Per Person to Support Carbon Neutrality at the Hangzhou Asian Games". The programme has by far garnered over 100 million participants.
