In Hangzhou, the Asian Games Village has taken a unique approach to stormwater management. Instead of using conventional manhole covers to drain water, the village has embraced the innovative concept of a "sponge city." This forward-thinking construction allows rainwater to be absorbed by the ground, resulting in quick drying of the roads during rainy periods.

The "sponge city" is a novel approach to urban stormwater management, allowing cities to mimic sponges by efficiently absorbing, storing, infiltrating, and purifying rainwater. When needed, the stored water is utilized, facilitating the free movement of rainwater within the urban environment.

The implementation of the "sponge city" construction concept is evident in various areas of the Asian Games Village, such as the Athlete Village, Technical Officials Village, and Media Village. Geng Lei, a staff member, highlights that this approach effectively controls urban rainwater, minimizing the ecological impact of urban development. Given that, the Asian Games Village proudly will welcome international guests with its green, ecological, and healthy environment.
