On June 15, the "Exciting Hangzhou" 2023 National Modern Pentathlon Championships kicked off at the Fuyang Yinhu Sports Centre. On June 19, the first day of finals, the men's and women's individual events were completed. Zhong Xiuting, Zhang Mingyu, and Zheng Lishan ranked in the top three in the women's group, while Luo Shuai, Zhang Linbin, and Li Shuhuan were in the top three in the men's group.

Consisting of equestrian, fencing, swimming, shooting, and running, modern pentathlon is one of the events at the Hangzhou Asian Games. Athletes are ranked based on the points they have earned and accumulated.

Zhong Xiuting, Zhang Mingyu, Luo Shuai, and Zhang Linbin have all secured their qualifications for participating in the Hangzhou Asian Games. Among them, Zhang Mingyu was the champion of the women's individual event in modern pentathlon at the 18th Asian Games Jakarta 2018. She said, she was trying to adapt to the new rules through this competition and address her weaknesses, thus striving for a good result in the Hangzhou Asian Games.
