Hangzhou sees 2.5m tourists during Tomb Sweeping Day holiday

Hangzhou, capital of Zhejiang province, welcomed 2.55 million tourists during the three-day Tomb Sweeping Day holiday, up 7.3 percent from last year's holiday, according to the Hangzhou Municipal Tourism Commission.

Tourism revenue from major scenic spots including Xixi National Wetland Park, Lingyin Temple, and Qiandao Lake exceeded 100 million yuan ($14.89 million) during the holiday, which lasted from April 5 to 7, according to official statistics.

The West Lake Scenic Area in Hangzhou ranked first among popular tourist attractions in China.

To attract more visitors, assorted activities showcasing Hangzhou's distinctive culture were held throughout the holiday, including art performances featuring Han clothing and Shaoxing opera, as well as a music festival.

The tourism boom can also be partly attributed to the newly-opened Hangzhou-Huangshan railway, which serves as a major means of transport for tourists, as there are seven 5A-level scenic spots and over 50 4A-level tourist attractions along the route. More than 35 percent of total visitors in Hangzhou are from neighboring areas such as Shanghai, Jiangsu and Anhui province.

The three-day holiday, also known as Qingming Festival, fell on April 5 this year. It is a traditional Chinese holiday in which people pay tribute to deceased family members, friends and national heroes. Chinese people have been using the day for spring outings since ancient times.
