[Photo/cri.cn] Fifty-one gifted mathematicians from 30 world-renowned universities were awarded at the first Alibaba Global Mathematics Competition in Hangzhou, capital of Zhejiang province on March 29. Thirteen of the 51 winners are from Peking University, while four came from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in the United States. The competition, open to math enthusiasts all over the world, ran for six months and gathered over 30,000 math talents, including data analysts from JP Morgan, engineers from Google, mathematics training teachers, and even university students as young as 18 years old. Mathematics is the foundation of all science and propels social development. It is closely related to information technology, artificial intelligence, internet of things, microchips, computer science, and data, said Jack Ma, founder and executive chairman of Alibaba Group. He adds that the competition is aimed at making more people like math and facilitating math research. The second Alibaba Global Mathematics Competition was launched at the award ceremony.
