Xiacheng district of Hangzhou, Zhejiang province, recently rolled out a virtual dressing mirror driven by 5G technology, allowing shoppers to try on 10 sets of clothes within one minute just by clicking buttons on the mirror, local media reported on March 15. The mirror, situated in the Hangzhou Chinese Silk City, is jointly built by China Mobile Zhejiang branch and the district and completely supported by the 5G network without any Wifi or cables. As a commercial application of 5G technology, the mirror aims to provide consumers a fast, interactive and real-life fitting experience with the help of virtual reality (VR) video capture techniques, said an official from China Mobile Zhejiang branch. "Aside from the virtual dressing mirror, we will continue to explore other VR applications, including those for street view imagery and silk production," said the official, adding that augmented reality (AR) and VR are becoming more prominent in the 5G era. 5G technology will be at least 10 times or even hundred-fold the peak rate of 4G, which will bring great advantages in AR and VR experiences for users, according to the official. The China Mobile Zhejiang branch is an active explorer in the application of 5G technology in VR and AR. It has built a large 5G trial network in Hangzhou, which is expected to be put into commercial use in the second half of this year.
