People give credit to the Grand Canal for the rise ofHangzhou. Since the canal was listed as World Cultural Heritage, the protection and management work should be improved accordingly.

Hangzhou Grand Canal World Cultural Heritage Protection Planningis being examined these days. WENG Wenjie, director of Hangzhou Garden and Cultural Relics Bureau, said, “We need to find out the ‘greatest common divisor’ between heritage protection and urban development.”
