Singapore Airlines to open 1st direct link between New Zealand, Australian capitals

The New Zealand and Australian capitals are to have their first ever commercial direct air link this year thanks to a new service announced by Singapore Airlines on Wednesday.

The service, which will operate between Wellington and Singapore via Canberra four times a week, will begin in September.

"This new service opens up two new international connections and creates the first ever, non-stop connection between New Zealand and Canberra and the first direct service (operated with a single flight-number) between Wellington and Singapore," New Zealand Transport Minister Simon Bridges said in a statement.

"The new service will have significant benefits for the Wellington economy and the tourism sector with it expected to generate 95 million NZ dollars (60.63 million U.S. dollars) in visitor expenditure and add around 44 million NZ dollars (28.08 million U.S. dollars) to the national economy."

Previously travellers between New Zealand and Canberra had to transit in Melbourne or Sydney, but the new Boeing 777 service would cut travel time between the two capitals from a minimum of six hours down to four hours, said Wellington Chamber of Commerce chief executive John Milford.

"Exporters in central New Zealand will also benefit greatly, having time-critical access to a new part of Australia, as well as to one of the biggest freight hubs in the world, Singapore's Changi Airport. The aircraft can carry more than 15 tonnes of cargo, compared with the 2 tonnes on existing narrow-body aircraft," Milford said in a statement.
