Canada gains expanded beef and pork market access to Ukraine

Ukraine has approved beef and pork exports from any Canadian federally registered establishments that meet certification requirements, according to Canadian Ministry of International Trade Monday.

"Our government is pleased that the Ukrainian market has opened to more Canadian beef and pork producers. Ukraine is an important market for Canadian exporters and the recently concluded Canada-Ukraine Free Trade Agreement is a testament to the strengthening economic relationship between our two countries," said Canadian Minister of International Trade Chrystia Freeland said in an announcement.

In September 2015, 15 more Canadian establishments are allowed to export beef and pork to Ukraine, making the total to 27.

The two countries concluded negotiations toward the Canada-Ukraine Free Trade Agreement (CUFTA) in July 2015, and are currently reviewing the text so as to start implementation processes.

Once fully implemented, the agreement will lift all non-agricultural tariffs and most of Ukraine's agricultural tariffs, including those on Canadian beef, pork, grains, seafood, processed foods and animal feed.

The trade volume between Canada and Ukraine averaged 293.3 million Canadian Dollars (some 220 million U.S. dollars) from 2012 to 2014, and is expected to expand by 19 percent as a result of the implementation of the CUFTA.
