Maduro calls for "fixed" global oil price at 70 U.S. dollars

Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro on Tuesday called for a "fixed" oil price at around 70 U.S. dollars per barrel and predicted that a meeting of oil producing nations scheduled for next week in Austria would bring "good news" to the global economy.

Maduro stressed the importance of the upcoming meeting which will be attended by experts from the member states of the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) and other oil producing nations that are not part of the energy alliance.

"The most important proposal that we have is a meeting of heads of state of OPEC and non-OPEC countries to coordinate a strategic oil policy for the next 10 years," Maduro said in his weekly TV program.

He added that if member states agree on a presidents' meeting, Venezuela will propose a plan for the coming decade and perhaps in 2016 global oil prices could see a period of "stabilization."

He also highlighted the need to have a new pricing structure, which, in his view, should set the minimum oil price per barrel at 70 U.S. dollars.

On Tuesday, Venezuelan oil closed at 41 U.S. dollars per barrel, which represents an almost 60-percent drop in comparison with 2014.

An OPEC technical meeting will be held on Oct. 21 in Vienna, capital of Austria, and will be attended by Venezuelan Oil and Mining Minister Eulogio del Pino and non-OPEC nations such as Azerbaijan, Brazil, Colombia, Kazakhstan, Norway, Mexico, Oman and Russia, according to sources from Venezuela's state oil company PDVSA.

OPEC members account for 40 percent of global consumption and produce 30 million barrels of oil per day.
