Burkina Faso's presidential guard declares coup

Burkina Faso's presidential guard unit, the former security team for ex-President Blaise Compaore, on Thursday declared it had taken over power in the country.

In a televised broadcast, they lambasted the transition government which, according to them, was not a democratic government and it was working to ensure a certain individual is installed as the president.

The soldiers descended on the streets, shooting in the air to disperse crowds that had gathered.

The streets have now been deserted and businesses have been shut. Ouagadougou's main market has been closed and offices have equally been shut.

The situation is still tensed in Ouagadougou after Wednesday's arrest of interim President Michel Kafando, his Prime Minister Lieutenant-Colonel Yacouba Isaac Zida and members of the cabinet by soldiers of the presidential guard unit.

Gun shots were heard throughout Wednesday night to Thursday morning. Soldiers were seen patrolling the streets in search of youths who were planing to oppose the seizure of power.

A security source told Xinhua that Burkina Faso's former President Jean Baptise Ouedraogo had initiated dialogue.

Civil society organizations have called for protests on Thursday to block the power seizure, while the country's main trade union has called for a general strike across the entire national territory until further notice.

The governments of France, the U.S., the African Union and the Economic Community of West African States have condemned the move by the presidential guard.

In a statement, the Speaker of Interim Parliament Moumina Cheriff SY called on "all patriots to come out and defend our mother-land," before adding that "we have to carry out this assignment because Burkina Faso is in danger."

This presidential guard unit of over 1,300 officers, considered as the best trained unit in Burkina Faso, was accused of being responsible for numerous assassinations and disappearances during the former regime.
