Titled National Hygiene City, National Environmental Protection Model City, International Garden City, and awarded China Habitat Prize and UN Habitat Prize and, Hangzhou, with her advantageous natural environment, well sustained ecosystem and well equipped public facilities, Hangzhou becomes one of the most habitable cities in China.

In Hangzhou, urban and rural people's average habitat area has increased to 11.2 square meters for urban citizens and 49 square meters for rural citizens. Seasonal climate is distinct in Hangzhou, and annual average temperature is 16.2℃ downtown. Green plants covers an area of 7,091 hectares downtown, including 1,329 hectares public green belts, and developed areas has a green coverage of 35.9%. Smoke and dust control area is extending year by year, and noise in urban area is controlled below 56.6 DB, meeting the national standard. With increasing capacity of water, power and gas supply, Hangzhou is able to meet her citizen's needs, e.g., the water supply capacity is large enough for use before 2005.

Products are abundant and the logistics industry is prosperous in Hangzhou. There are a lot of famous, unique, excellent and new agricultural produce, handicrafts and light industry products. Traditional ones like silk, Wang's fans, Zhang's scissors and Dragon Well Tea keep their good reputation; Hangzhou cuisines like West Lake Sour and Sweet Fish, Shrimp and Tea Stew are tourists' favorites; fashion for women is rising in Hangzhou; modern malls and shopping centers like Yuanhua and Intime are also very competitive; what's more, World Top 500 retailers like German Metro, French Auchan and B&Q from the Netherlands have recently landed in Hangzhou. Hangzhou has become a paradise for shopping.

Hangzhou advances vigorously in culture, education and sports development in the past years. There are 33 universities and colleges, including prestigious Zhejiang University in Hangzhou, and about 174,900 regular students. Three Higher Education Zones in Xiasha, Xiaohe Shan and Binjiang, and ZJU's fundamental campus are under construction. The number of the planned college students will reach 200,000 by 2005. Hangzhou West Lake Cultural Square (under construction), Hangzhou Cultural and Commercial Town and the Dragon Sports Center are all most advanced public facilities in Zhejiang and even in China. Meanwhile, mass culture is developing fast.
