China Academy of Art and Tmall on Jan 14 jointly released their prediction on the most popular color of 2021: the lichi red. It looks like the color of lychee skin.

They named the color Geili Red(给荔红). The phrase "geili(给荔)" sounds the same as "给力", which means cool, awesome, or exciting.

Red is a popular color in Chinese culture, symbolizing luck, joy, and happiness. It also represents the summer season and the element of fire that comes with it. Decorating in red is believed to attract good luck to your household.

According to data from Tmall, as Chinese New Year draws near, goods with red color have occupied consumers' shopping trolley. Sales of red shoes, stationery, phone cases, and pet clothes have sharply increased.

"The color of red is a signal of hope, marking the best wishes for the new year," said Song Jianming, head of Color Research Institute of China Academy of Art.
